Arequipa and Colca Canyon: Peru’s White City and Condor Country

Arequipa, Peru’s second-largest city, captivates visitors with its stunning colonial architecture built from white volcanic stone. Combined with the nearby Colca Canyon, this region offers a perfect blend of urban culture and natural wonders.

Arequipa: The White City

Known as “La Ciudad Blanca,” Arequipa’s historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring magnificent buildings constructed from sillar, a white volcanic rock. The city sits at 2,335 meters, offering a milder climate than Cusco while still providing spectacular views of three surrounding volcanoes: Misti, Chachani, and Pichu Pichu.

Must-See in Arequipa:

Santa Catalina Monastery: This 20,000 square meter convent is a city within a city, featuring vibrant blue and ochre-painted walls, tranquil courtyards, and narrow streets. Founded in 1580, it remained closed to the outside world for nearly 400 years.

Plaza de Armas: One of Peru’s most beautiful main squares, dominated by the stunning Arequipa Cathedral and surrounded by colonial arcades with restaurants and cafes.

Juanita the Ice Maiden: The Museum of Andean Sanctuaries houses this perfectly preserved Inca mummy discovered on nearby Mount Ampato, offering fascinating insights into Inca rituals.

Colca Canyon Adventure:

Colca Canyon is twice as deep as Arizona’s Grand Canyon and offers incredible Andean landscapes, traditional villages, and the spectacular sight of Andean condors soaring on morning thermals. The Cruz del Condor viewpoint provides the best opportunity to see these magnificent birds up close.

Activities and Experiences:

Trek through terraced agricultural valleys that have been farmed for over 2,000 years, visit traditional villages where locals wear distinctive embroidered clothing, relax in natural hot springs after a day of hiking, and spot vicuñas, alpacas, and numerous bird species throughout the valley.

Planning Your Visit:

Most travelers spend 2-3 days in Arequipa and 2 days exploring Colca Canyon. The canyon can be visited as a day trip or overnight tour from Arequipa. The best condor viewing is typically between 8-10 AM. Arequipa’s mild year-round climate makes it an excellent destination any time, though the dry season (April-November) offers the clearest skies.
